What you will learn
- Ask ¿Qué tiempo hace? and give a short answer.
- Match weather expressions to observations.
- Keep a simple Spanish weather diary.
¿Qué tiempo hace? means ‘What is the weather like?’ You can answer Hace sol, ‘It is sunny’; Hace calor, ‘It is hot’; Hace frío, ‘It is cold’; Hace viento, ‘It is windy’; Llueve, ‘It is raining’; or Está nublado, ‘It is cloudy’. These expressions are whole language patterns. Spanish does not build every weather answer in exactly the same way, so learn the models rather than replacing words in an English sentence.
Look before choosing words
Weather describes conditions at a particular place and time. Look safely through a window or use a teacher’s picture. Bright sunshine can support Hace sol. Rain falling supports Llueve. Clouds covering much of the sky may support Está nublado. A photograph of clouds cannot tell you how hot the air feels. Do not infer every weather condition from one feature.
More than one expression may fit. A day can be sunny and hot: Hace sol. Hace calor. Wind can occur during rain or sunshine. You do not need to force each day into a single weather box. For our matching game, each prompt identifies a particular observation. In a real diary, record the place and time and choose the expressions that fit what you actually observe.
Worked example 1
What does ¿Qué tiempo hace? ask?
Show me how
Identify what the question asks.
What is the weather like?
It asks about the weather.

Use the complete pattern
Hace is used in Hace sol, Hace calor, Hace frío and Hace viento. Llueve is already a complete weather expression; do not add hace before it. Está nublado uses está. Notice the accent marks in qué, frío and está. The opening ¿ tells you a question is starting. Copy the whole expression carefully and then read it aloud with a teacher.
Take turns: one child asks ¿Qué tiempo hace? and the other looks at a card and answers Llueve. Swap roles. Next try a card with a sunny sky and answer Hace sol. Do not assess another child’s weather sentence from memory of yesterday’s weather. Check the prompt they were given. A correct answer must match the language model and the observation.
Worked example 2
Which expression means It is cloudy?
Show me how
Identify what the question asks.
Está nublado.
Está nublado describes cloudy weather.
Watch out! A common mistake
Do not write Hace llueve. Use Llueve by itself. Use Está nublado for cloudy weather, following the model.
A small weather diary
Make columns for date, time, place, drawing and Spanish expression. A sample entry might read ‘Monday, 9 a.m., school window: Hace sol.’ This is a practice example, not a weather report for today. Later in the day the weather may change. If it rains at lunchtime, make a new entry rather than changing the earlier observation as though it never happened.
Keep observations safe. Do not go outside during thunder or heavy rain to complete a diary. A window view, a supplied photograph or a teacher’s weather card is enough. Compare two entries by reading what each actually says. Hace calor and Hace frío describe different temperature conditions, while Llueve describes rain. Learning the category helps you choose a suitable answer without memorising the order of the cards.
Worked example 3
Which is a correct rain expression?
Show me how
Identify what the question asks.
