Celebrations in Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela – Standard 3 Spanish

What you will learn

  • Compare a celebration using music, food and family activities.
  • Recognise Spanish words linked with Christmas.
  • Use evidence and avoid saying all families celebrate alike.

Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela are close neighbours with varied cultural and religious traditions. Some families in both places celebrate Christmas, called Navidad in Spanish. Music, special foods, visiting and religious activities may be part of their celebrations. Other families celebrate differently or do not celebrate Christmas. Our lesson compares examples; it does not describe every person in either country.

Music travels and changes

Parang is an important part of Trinidad and Tobago’s Christmas season. Its traditions have links with Spanish-language music and connections across the nearby region, including Venezuela. Groups may sing and play instruments such as the cuatro. Traditions change as people share and adapt music. Do not describe every modern parang song as identical to an older Spanish-language song.

Listen to a short teacher-selected example if one is available with permission. Describe what you hear: a singing voice, strings, percussion or a repeated phrase. If no recording is available, compare written descriptions. La música means ‘the music’, and una canción means ‘a song’. A song can be a cultural example without telling us how every family celebrates. Do not reproduce song lyrics as part of this worksheet.

Foods and family examples

Pastelles are associated with Christmas in many Trinidad and Tobago homes. Hallacas are associated with Christmas in many Venezuelan homes. Both involve filled dough parcels prepared with wrapping leaves, but recipes and methods differ. Do not call them exactly the same dish. An adult can explain their family’s method without bringing food to school. Tasting is optional and is not needed for the quiz.

La comida means ‘the food’ and la familia means ‘the family’. Use these words while discussing a picture or interview. Ask a willing adult ‘What does your family do?’ rather than ‘What does everyone in your country do?’ Write the answer as that person’s example. Some traditions are religious, some are social, and some combine both. People decide which practices are meaningful to them.

Hallacas

Watch out! A common mistake

Do not write ‘all Venezuelans’ or ‘all Trinidadians’ for a practice described by one family. Pastelles and hallacas are related examples, not identical recipes.

Compare without ranking

Draw two columns and a middle space for similarities. You might write ‘some families share special foods’ in the middle, then name pastelles in one example and hallacas in another. A difference is not a mistake. Add a source such as ‘family interview’ or ‘teacher’s example’. Mark an unanswered question honestly instead of filling the space with a guess.

A respectful comparison explains both a similarity and a difference. It does not decide which culture is better or require classmates to take part in a religious practice. Feliz Navidad means ‘Merry Christmas’ and is suitable when you know the greeting is welcome. A general friendly greeting may suit someone else. Hospitality means recognising variety within communities as well as similarities between neighbours.
