What you will learn
- Locate Trinidad and Tobago on a map of the Caribbean.
- Name the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, and our closest neighbours.
- Give a direction from Trinidad to Grenada, Barbados, Tobago and Venezuela.
Trinidad and Tobago is a country of two main islands. Trinidad is the larger island. Tobago is smaller, and it lies to the north-east of Trinidad. The country sits at the southern end of the Caribbean island chain, very close to the continent of South America.
A map is a drawing of a place as if you were looking down from above. In this lesson you will use a map to say who is near, who is far, and which way to point. You will also sort islands into the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles.
Two islands at the southern end
Find the Caribbean Sea on the regional map. The islands curve from the north-west down toward South America. Trinidad and Tobago is at the southern end of that curve. Venezuela, on the continent, is the nearest country across the water. Grenada is the nearest Caribbean island, to the north.
Trinidad and Tobago is one country made of two islands, plus some small islands. Port of Spain, the capital, is on Trinidad. Scarborough is the capital of Tobago. When a test says “Trinidad and Tobago”, name the country. When it says “Tobago”, name the smaller island to the north-east.

Worked example 1
A child says Tobago is a different country, south of Trinidad. What will you correct?
Show me how
Tobago and Trinidad are parts of one country, Trinidad and Tobago.
Tobago is the smaller island, and it lies to the north-east of Trinidad.
The capital of the country, Port of Spain, is on Trinidad. Scarborough is the capital of Tobago.
Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles
The Greater Antilles are the large islands to the north: Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. Hispaniola is one island shared by two countries, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
The Lesser Antilles are the smaller islands in the curve that runs down toward South America. Grenada, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and Barbados are in that curve. Trinidad and Tobago is at the southern end of the Lesser Antilles.
Some books split the Lesser Antilles into Windward Islands and Leeward Islands, and they do not all draw the line in the same place. In this lesson the Windward Islands include Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and Grenada. The Leeward Islands are farther north, and they include Antigua and Saint Kitts. We do not call Trinidad and Tobago a Windward Island here. We call it the southern end of the Lesser Antilles, next to the Windwards and next to South America.
Worked example 2
Sort these into Greater Antilles or Lesser Antilles: Cuba, Grenada, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago.
Show me how
Cuba and Jamaica are large islands in the Greater Antilles.
Grenada is a smaller island in the Lesser Antilles.
Trinidad and Tobago is at the southern end of the Lesser Antilles.
Watch out! A common mistake
Do not call Venezuela an island in the Caribbean chain. Venezuela is a country on the continent of South America. Cuba is an island, but it is far to the north in the Greater Antilles. It is not our closest neighbour.
Directions and the closest neighbours
Stand in Trinidad and point. Grenada is north. Barbados is north-east. Tobago is north-east of Trinidad. Venezuela is west and south-west, across a narrow stretch of water, on the continent of South America. Guyana is also on that continent, farther south-east along the coast.
Closest does not mean largest. Cuba is huge, but it is not the closest neighbour. Grenada is smaller, and it is the nearest Caribbean island. On a test, read the question. “Closest Caribbean island” means Grenada. “Closest country on the continent” means Venezuela.
A useful map has a title, a compass, and labels that do not cross. Draw Trinidad larger than Tobago. Put Tobago to the north-east. Mark Grenada to the north and Venezuela to the west.
Investigate, with an adult
Materials. A pencil, a sheet of paper, and an adult to check the names.
Steps. Sketch Trinidad and Tobago. Add a compass. Label Grenada to the north, Barbados to the north-east, and Venezuela on the continent.
Safety. Use a pencil. Do not copy a map from a book word for word if the task says to draw your own.

Let’s practise
Work each one in your copybook. Open Hint if you are stuck, then open Show answer to check.
1. Name the two main islands of our country, and say which one is larger.
Hint
One capital, Port of Spain, is on the larger island.
Show answer
Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad is larger. Tobago is smaller.
2. In which direction is Tobago from Trinidad?
Hint
Think of the compass, not the size.
Show answer
North-east.
3. Name the four Greater Antilles islands used in this lesson.
Hint
One of them is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Show answer
Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.
4. Which Caribbean island is our nearest island neighbour, and in which direction is it?
Hint
It is not the biggest island.
Show answer
Grenada, to the north.
5. Which country on the continent of South America is nearest to Trinidad?
Hint
It is across a narrow stretch of water.
Show answer
Venezuela.
6. Why does this lesson not call Trinidad and Tobago a Windward Island?
Hint
Say where we place it instead.
Show answer
Different books draw the Windward line in different places. This lesson places Trinidad and Tobago at the southern end of the Lesser Antilles, next to the Windwards and next to South America.
7. A test asks for the closest neighbour and a child writes Cuba. What is wrong?
Hint
Read whether the question says island or continent, and think about distance.
Show answer
Cuba is far to the north. The nearest Caribbean island is Grenada. The nearest continent country is Venezuela.
8. List three things a clear map of our country should show.
Hint
Think about the two islands, a compass, and a neighbour.
Show answer
Trinidad larger than Tobago, Tobago to the north-east, a compass, and a label for Grenada or Venezuela.

- The city where the government of a country or island is based.
Example: Port of Spain is the capital of Trinidad and Tobago. - compass direction
- A way of pointing: north, south, east or west.
Example: Tobago is north-east of Trinidad.
Try it at home
- With an adult, sketch Trinidad and Tobago, mark north, and label Grenada and Venezuela.
- On a globe or a map in a book, find Cuba and then find Trinidad. Say which one is farther north.
Test tips
Tips for class tests
- If the question says “nearest island”, write Grenada, not Cuba.
- If the question says “continent”, write Venezuela, not an island.
- Use the grouping from class. Do not add Trinidad and Tobago to the Windward list unless the teacher has told you to.
For parents and teachers
After this lesson, your child should be able to:
- Place the country at the southern end of the Lesser Antilles and name the two islands.
- Name the Greater Antilles and give directions to Grenada, Barbados, Tobago and Venezuela.
- Explain why Cuba is not the closest neighbour.
Map outlines differ slightly from book to book. The directions in this lesson match the usual Standard 3 teaching: Grenada to the north, Barbados and Tobago to the north-east, and Venezuela on the continent across the Gulf of Paria. Windward and Leeward lists are not the same in every book, so this lesson states the list it uses and does not force Trinidad and Tobago into the Windwards.
