Why Computers Are So Useful

Quick challenge: how long would it take you to add up the test marks of every student in your school? An hour? A whole day? A computer could do it before you finish blinking. And that is only one reason computers are everywhere. Let’s look at the others.

In this post:

  • Seven reasons computers are so useful today
  • Examples from everyday Caribbean life
  • What computers are not good at
  • A human vs computer challenge, a matching activity and a quiz

Seven reasons computers are so useful

ReasonWhat it meansEveryday example
SpeedComputers carry out millions of instructions every second.A supermarket checkout adds up your whole basket in an instant.
AccuracyIf the data and the program are correct, the answer is correct.A spreadsheet works out every student’s average without a single mistake.
ReliabilityComputers can work day and night without getting tired or bored.ATMs and online banking are open 24 hours a day.
ConsistencyA computer gives the same result every time for the same job.Multiple-choice answer sheets can be marked by machine, so every sheet is marked the same way.
Storage capacityHuge amounts of information fit in a tiny space.Your phone can hold thousands of photos; a school keeps years of records on one server.
Cost-effectivenessOnce set up, computers can save time and money.Sending an email costs far less than printing and posting a letter.
ConvenienceYou can do things from wherever you are.Paying a bill, shopping, or handing in homework online from home.

Watch out for “garbage in, garbage out”. A computer is only accurate if the data you give it is correct. If a teacher types 9 instead of 90, the computer will happily work out the wrong average!

Two maps from a computer weather model showing many possible tracks for Hurricane Rita in the Gulf of Mexico.
Computer models of Hurricane Rita (2005). Each line is one possible path worked out by a computer. Forecasters run models like these again and again to warn islands and coastlines in time: speed, accuracy and storage working together.

But computers are not perfect

  • They can only do what they are programmed to do. They do not think or feel like people.
  • When a system goes down (a power cut or a network failure), work can stop completely.
  • Some jobs change or disappear when computers take over tasks people used to do.
  • Personal information stored on computers can be misused if it is not protected.
  • Computers and training cost money, and using them too much can affect your health (remember our lessons on ergonomics and hazards).

Watch: computers all around us

This short cartoon shows computers at work in school, at work and at play. How many of the seven reasons can you spot?

Activity: human vs computer

Try it: human vs computer speed challenge

Add up 10 sums as fast as you can. Type each answer and press Enter. Then let the computer have a go!

Activity: which reason is it?

Try it: match the example to the reason

Choose the reason that each example shows best.

A hospital keeps the records of 50,000 patients on one computer system
Online banking lets you check your account at midnight on a Sunday
A calculator app works out 4,872 × 365 instantly
A spreadsheet totals 300 marks with no mistakes
A machine marks every multiple-choice sheet in exactly the same way
A school emails newsletters instead of printing 800 copies
You hand in your homework online from home

Journal entry

In your ICT journal, write about one day in your life. List every time you used a computer or a device with a computer inside it (phone, ATM, game console, the checkout at the shop). For three of them, say which reason from the table made the computer useful.

Self-check quiz

Click the best answer. You get feedback straight away; only your first click counts towards your score.

1. Which reason is shown when a computer works all night without getting tired?

2. What does “garbage in, garbage out” mean?

3. Your phone holds 5,000 photos. Which reason is this?

4. Shopping online from home is an example of…

5. Which is a disadvantage of computers?

6. Computer models help forecasters warn islands about hurricanes. Which reasons does this show?
