For parents and teachers

  • Read every day. Ten to twenty minutes of a book your child chooses, and talk about it afterwards.
  • Ask deeper questions. “Why did the character do that?” and “What would you have done?”
  • Write for real reasons. Letters, e-mails, lists, diaries and stories all count.
  • Value both ways of speaking. Talk about when we use Creole and when we use Standard English.
  • Talk about adverts. Ask “What does this advert want you to do? How is it trying to persuade you?”
